Let's talk about the gate incident

Author:  Brandon (Dad)

We've boarded the 5:27 out of Euston Station and we're headed to Liverpool.  Really pumped for today as we'll get to experience two of my favorite things:  Liverpool FC and The Beatles.  I'm sure I'll give a recap later.

As we're stuck on this train for the next couple of hours and I paid £5 for Internet access, I thought I'd give you all my review of yesterday's events.  Let's start out with the tube incident....

I love Tiffany very much.  She's a wonderful wife, mother, friend, runner, librarian, etc.  She is not, however, a good London Underground rider.  In fact, she is probably among the worst the system has ever seen.

Last night's incident, I'll call it "Gategate", has been much recounted and there are several different versions going around.  Basically, two people got through the closing gate when there should have been three.  Well, more like two and a half made it through.

To be fair, each of us might shoulder part of the blame:

1)  Brandon could be blamed for not riding on the same lift up to ground level as the rest of the family.  They were all crammed on one with about 75 people.  I backed away and said, "nah, I'm good.  I'll see you on the next one", then enjoyed a nearly empty lift ride up about 60 seconds later.  If I was with them, I could have helped split the kids up.  I mean, no kids are getting stuck in gates on my watch.

2)  Luke could be blamed.  He was the one who flashed the oyster card and opened the gates.  He also might be responsible for diverting Tiffany's attention away from her other child, if even momentarily.

3)  Livi herself could be blamed.  I mean, she has been known to hesitate a bit at the gates.  I witnessed it first hand the day before.  Not to the point that a gate would shut on her, but it was the end of a very long day... she might have been a bit slow to move.

4)  Tiffany could be blamed because she's an adult after all and should be able to get two kids through the gate.  As Luke recalled, I pulled the move off the day before.  It's not terribly difficult.  Further compounding Tiffany's guilt is the fact that she was, apparently, laughing during the incident.  To be honest, I think Livi takes more offense at this than anything else.  In Tiffany's defense, when I heard what had happened, I laughed pretty hard too.

For the record, Livi wasn't hurt.  At least we don't think she was.  Haven't really asked her.

An exact replica of the scene of the crime.

We also went to Westminster Abbey on Monday which is was absolutely amazing.  Some of you don't know this, but I'm a complete nerd about English history.  I've read or listened to many books, some of them very long, on subjects such as the English Revolution, The Plantangent dynasty, and the Monarchy in general.  I'm currently up to about 1075 in an extremely long podcast series on the history of England.  It is so long I would only recommend it to one other person who shares my bizarre love of history ('sup Craig!).

To see that much history in one spot was absolutely amazing.  I mean, I saw the shrine of Edward the ConfessorEdward the Confessor! Too bad we couldn't take pictures in there or you'd see a whole bunch of selfies with me standing near effigies of long dead English monarchs and noblemen.

Alright, that's enough from me.  Until next time....
