Liverpool!

Thought I'd take a quick moment to recap Tuesday's activities while Tiffany is out for a morning run.

We got up very early and met our 4:30 mini cab to London Euston Station to board a 5:27 train to Liverpool.  The train ride up was smooth and, after a switch at Liverpool South Parkway, we arrived at Central Station around 8:30 in the morning.

After grabbing a coffee we wandered over to Mathew Street, home of the legendary Cavern Club where the Beatles and many other bands got their start.  It was a really neat scene, though it is probably a lot livelier at night than at 8:45 in the morning.

We started walking North, crisscrossing the streets of Liverpool, in the direction of Anfield.  Of course, we had to stop at the Liverpool Central Library which sits in an historic building next to the World Museum and right off St. George's Quarter.  The library was about as impressive as a library can be to a guy like me.  Very modern and well laid out.  Tiffany could have stayed there all day probably, but I dragged her out so we could make it up to Anfield, home of Liverpool Football Club

We had planned on walking the 2.5 miles up to Anfield, but our little detour at the library made me decide to catch the bus, which turned out to be the right call.  It would have been a long 2.5 miles.

We got in to Anfield and wandered through the museum and LFC fan store.  Both were extremely impressive.  Luke and Livi picked out jackets and I bought a retro jersey from the 1984 European Cup Final

The tour was fantastic as well.  We saw the home and visiting team rooms, media room, field, and got a lot of insight from a very entertaining tour guide.

Following the tour we had lunch in The Boot Room, which was another treat.

We hopped on the bus and got down to central Liverpool again, walking over to the The Royal Albert Dock and into The Beatles Story.  This was a great museum that told the history of the Beatles with an emphasis on their time in Liverpool.  It was stocked full of artifacts and memorabilia - really cool for a Beatles nut like me.  The kids picked up a couple of t-shirts in the Fab Four Store.

With a bit of time to kill, we wandered over to Tesco and let the kids pick up their Panini World Cup sticker books, then sat for an hour or so in a restaurant where we enjoyed a pint (real pint, not those skimpy American ones) and collected ourselves for the ride back to London.

It was a long day, but extremely rewarding.  Liverpool is the home to two of my favorite institutions:  The Beatles and Liverpool Football Club, so I was sure to reserve a day of our London stay for the trip North.

The city itself was great...I'd love to explore it more.  It certainly has a different feel than London.  A bit grittier and not quite as polished.  I liked it a lot.

Tiffany should be back now and we need to get rolling soon.  After three very full days, we are hoping to slow down a bit today.  Of course, that's not usually our way, so we'll see how it goes.
