Tetris World Champion
Author: Brandon (Dad)
With our flight to London still a day away, we're settling in for our first night away from the house. We've spent most of the last week working (nearly) around the clock, trying to cram our belongings into the two PODS we have parked in our driveway.
This photo doesn't do my packing job justice. By the time we rolled down the door this evening, we were completely full. After this performance, I feel confident I would be ranked in the Top 10 in the world in Tetris, if there was such a thing. (Note: Apparently there IS such a thing. Check this out: http://www.tetrisfriends.com/leaderboard/index.php. I love Google.)
We were hoping to be completely finished with the moving process today, but it looks like we'll have to make a return trip to the house in the morning for a few odds and ends.
In addition to the packing, we spent a couple hours running errands. Lucy, our beagle, is at her summer home with a very nice family we recently met. Sally the cat has moved next door and is absolutely pissed off about it I'm sure. It's OK. She's pissed off about everything.
We sold our Honda Pilot, dropped off some old computer equipment at a recycling center, returned our Internet equipment.... it was a pretty busy day.
We even had a chance to enjoy one more dinner with our good friends, the Moores Family. Tiffany and I have been enjoying Mexican food as much as possible lately, knowing we're probably going to be hitting a dry spell soon. The last time we were in Dubrovnik, we found a restaurant that featured a burrito on the menu. I can assure you, Croatians have no idea what a burrito is.
Tonight we're staying in the guest house of our good friends, Mark & Allie Ketcham. They live on a beautiful estate in Healdsburg (http://www.ketchamestate.com/) and produce some outstanding wines. We thought this would be a good trial run... pushing the suitcases, fighting over who sleeps where, arguing about the sink, etc. It's a good sneak peek at some of the fun we'll have over the next few months.
Midway through our day of packing, Luke broke down after walking through our nearly empty house with his camera. I think it hit him for the first time that we're leaving the only house he's ever known. To be honest, I thought we'd be dealing with a lot more emotion from the kids over the move. They've been very positive over the past weeks, excited not only about our upcoming journey to Europe, but whatever the future might hold.
While we have tentative plans to move back in to our old rental house in Cotati in a few months, just a half hour or so south of Windsor, we all know that it's a temporary move at best. In all likelihood, we'll be moving somewhere else to take the next step in our careers. It could be California..could be the East Coast... hell, it could be Europe. We honestly do not know what comes next. And you know what? I'm good with that.
Tomorrow we'll hop on the Airport Express shuttle and head down to the Oakland Airport to officially get this adventure started. Next stop: London, England.

Happy Trails to you! Your flight is on my computer and I will be following you to London....except when I am sleeping.
